We are thrilled to share the outstanding achievement of Independent’s by Sodexo’s young Head Chef, Calum Smith of Shrewsbury School, who secured an incredible third place and became the first Welsh chef ever to place on the podium at the recently concluded, Young Global Chef World Finals 2026.

Held at ICC Wales in Newport as part of the Worldchefs Congress & Expo, this year’s competition marked a milestone. For the first time in its prestigious 98-year history it was hosted in the UK.
Competing against some of the world’s most talented young chefs, Calum delivered an exceptional performance at the competition. During the final, competitors were tasked with preparing a three-course meal for four people within just three hours.

An exciting culinary career
At just 25 years old, Calum has already established a reputation on the international culinary stage. Previously he represented Wales at the Culinary World Cup, Culinary Olympics and Global Chefs competitions, he recently helped secure gold for Wales at the Alen Thong Golden Coffee Pot Challenge in Sharjah, UAE.
Calum was also adjudged National Junior Chef of Wales 2025, further highlighting his creativity, technical ability and dedication to his craft. Alongside his competition success, Calum continues to play a key role at Shrewsbury School as Head Chef. Amongst his duties includes overseeing the preparation of nourishing, high-quality meals for pupils and staff within the school’s busy boarding environment.
Culinary excellence on the global stage
Speaking ahead of the competition, Calum said:
“Working at Shrewsbury School and recently being named Head Chef is a huge privilege for me.
“It’s an incredible honour to represent my country on a global stage alongside so many talented chefs. I have taken enjoyment in planning for the competition, as I take great pride in attention to detail, and I’m confident my passion and flare will shine through in every course I present.”
