Hurstpierpoint College, a coeducational boarding and day school for pupils aged 4 to 18, is located in the West Sussex countryside and is renowned for its exceptional all-round education. Hurstpierpoint first entrusted Sodexo with its catering operation in 1969 when the College was still an all-boys school. Today our catering team, led by Contract Director Andrew Boon and Executive Head Chef Stuart Jellis, delivers a service of exceptional quality, matched by our commitment to implementing innovative solutions to enhance the school food experience for day pupils and boarders alike.

“Hurst to Go”

In line with market trends, many boarders enjoy ordering takeaway food to be delivered to their Houses from well-known high-street brands. As the school’s catering partner, we were determined to provide a popular takeaway service on-site while delivering social impact for the school. Through our Everyday app, we introduced a new click and collect service – “Hurst to Go” for boarders to order their favourite takeaway foods including pizzas, chicken and burgers – all freshly made on-site. We’re proud that our Hurst to Go pizzas contain just a third of the salt content found in an equivalent Domino’s pizza! Since we launched the app in September 2024, we’ve seen 275 boarders sign up – over half the boarding population at Hurst – and the number of orders per night has already doubled. In fact, satisfaction with our service is so high the College has taken the decision to suspend the use of takeaway food companies for delivery on-site. Keen to make the service cost effective for pupils and deliver social value for the school, any profit we make from Hurst to Go will be channelled into the Hurst Foundation for charitable causes.

Pupil Cookery Classes

Led by our Executive Head Chef, we’ve introduced a popular after-school cookery course for senior pupils in years 9-11 to nurture their interest in nutritious food. With weekly sessions taking place over five weeks, the programme sees the pupils start by developing basic knife skills, before progressing to cooking a stirfry, posh nosh and restaurant-style salads and dressings and focusing on presentation skills, with the final session offering a mystery bag of ingredients from which the pupils can create their own unique dish.
At the end of the course, the Deputy Head judges the dishes cooked by each participating pupil and awards the winner an apron and a box of delicious treats made by our kitchen team. We’ve had wonderful feedback from parents on the initiative, with one mother commenting that her son now makes her breakfast every week!

To ensure we deliver a wide variety of tasty foods at Hurst, we’ve introduced a street food style offer at the Shack, which is located within the school’s sports facilities, facilitating a relaxed dining environment that the pupils love. The Shack provides an alternative food destination replicating high street trends and featuring weekly rotating food concepts. Dishes include a range of international options like ramen, poke bowls, nachos, loaded naan bread and our extremely popular chicken and waffles alongside delicious soups and other staples.
With each class accessing the Shack one lunchtime per week for parity, it’s a favourite foodie highlight that everyone looks forward to at Hurst! To enhance our green credentials, we’ve removed all disposables from the Shack and pupils enjoy eating their street food dishes out of reusable boxes – helping lower the College’s carbon footprint while delivering tasty, nutritious food to nurture the minds of all at Hurstpierpoint.
