A school steeped in history near Perth in North Eastern Scotland, Strathallan is a mixed all-through school which educates 314 boarders and 292 day pupils. Sodexo has been delivering the catering services here since 1998, and with outstanding management from our Catering Manager Amelia McWhinney and Head Chef Bruce Price, we’ve developed an excellent food offer and dining environment which meet the demands of today’s generation of pupils.

A Brand New Dining Hall
As part of our service offer to Strathallan, we provided the school with significant investment to realise our shared ambition for a full refurbishment of the school dining hall. With support from our professional designers, we worked closely with the school to create a contemporary look and feel which reflects the school’s rich heritage. At the start of the 2024 academic year, we unveiled “Harry’s”, a transformed eating environment named after the school’s founder Harry Riley. With brand new counters, new seating including high, low and round tables, a newly-configured layout for more convivial mealtimes and TV screens displaying the day’s menu and advertising upcoming events, the space bears little resemblance to a traditional school dining hall and is now the beating heart of the school – a unique selling point for prospective parents and pupils.
Keeping the Offer Fresh
Our Strathallan Head Chef Bruce displays a real passion for innovation in the food offer onsite. With the recent introduction of a deli bar on Tuesdays and Thursdays alongside the hot main dishes, Bruce ensures continual variety by making different breads, salads and protein options each week to satisfy all palates and encourage the pupils to try new flavours. A wide range of healthy foods are available daily and we’ve seen the butternut squash and chilli soup, spinach and broccoli pasta and rainbow slaw go down a storm! With his strong focus on presentation, Bruce creates visual feasts to make mealtimes fun – particularly important for the boarders who eat onsite three times a day, seven days a week in termtime. Seasonal updates have brought fresh additions to our offerings, including overnight oats, mango smoothies and watermelon & feta salad. Saturday evenings now feature global flavours, with recent highlights including a Japanese – themed menu complete with homemade sushi, yakatori chicken and tempura vegetables.
Our Manager of the Year
With her exceptional leadership skills, Amelia has taken the catering service to the next level at Strathallan. Amelia speaks in a school assembly every term, initially to introduce herself to the new pupils and then to support the school in educating them on everything from allergens, how to build a healthy plate and food waste. Her sensitive management style has filtered down to the whole catering team, and with a happy atmosphere in the kitchen, school cuisine has reached even greater heights. Amelia’s genuine passion for communicating with the pupils on a daily basis and driving continual enhancements in the service has earned her the winner of our 2024 Manager of the Year Award for our schools’ business.
Strathallan Headmaster recently commented: “Amelia should be commended for going further than any other manager we have had in engaging and delivering for the pupils; she genuinely cares for their wellbeing. When we presented the Sodexo management team with our vision of ‘breaking the boundaries for independent school catering in the UK’, I believe Amelia and the onsite team have embodied this vision in their daily work.”
