The interior view of Welington Cafe

V&A Café – THE BEATING HEART at Wellington College

The V&A Café at Wellington is “the beating heart” of the College. Catering for quick breaks in busy schedules and bustling lunches, the V&A also offers an all-day café-style destination from morning through to evening. It’s a vital component in the catering mix at Wellington College.

For Independents by Sodexo, the opportunity to reimagine the V&A was a chance to do more than improve capacity. It was an opportunity to develop an inviting alternative to the Main Dining Hall. One that could ease pressure during peak times, offer greater variety, support pupil wellbeing, and make a meaningful contribution to campus life while bringing people together through food.

The result is a café that combines operational excellence with a warm, inspiring atmosphere, a space that offers both experiential and operational excellence, befitting of its setting at Wellington College.

V&A Café

A Transformative Space with Purpose

A Home from Home

The new design reflects how we use spaces at home, zoning the café into familiar areas such as The Kitchen, The Dining Room, and The Lounge. The zonal layout is an important part of pastoral care, as it provides pupils with a safe, comfortable environment.

Operational Effectiveness

The front-of-house features state-of-the-art equipment, and the back-of-house kitchen has been completely overhauled. The space functions as an all-day retail café while also transforming into a high-capacity food service environment during busy meal periods.

Thoughtful Zoning

Consultations with pupils and staff revealed concerns about social anxiety in busy food areas. The layout has been designed to avoid the “catwalk” effect, where a direct route to the servery can make pupils feel exposed. Zoning and thoughtful design help everyone feel more at ease.

A Distinctive Setting

Taking subtle inspiration from the adjacent Selangor Court, the interior blends a modern high-street feel with elements that connect back to the College’s heritage. Brand colours are reflected in the finishes, creating a strong visual identity that is unmistakably Wellington.

Engagement and Community Involvement

The transformation of the V&A was shaped by early and ongoing input from the College Leadership Team, staff, and pupils. Their involvement helped ensure the café meets practical needs while reflecting the values and vision of the wider community.

The project has strengthened relationships across the College and brought the Wellington brand to life through a catering experience that feels both unique and familiar.

Extending the V&A Beyond Term Time

Outside of term time, the V&A also supports the College’s external lettings programme. It provides an attractive and flexible space for international schools and other organisations that use the College’s facilities and accommodation. The transformed café adds a new option to the venue portfolio and creates an additional revenue stream, helping the College make the most of its resources year-round.
